Is My Retinal Issue an Emergency? When to Call Our Jacksonville Retina Specialist

Retinal symptoms can be frightening, especially when they appear suddenly. Some changes may be mild or temporary, while others can signal a serious retinal issue that needs prompt care. At Retina Associates, P.A., our Board-Certified Ophthalmologist, Dr. Mansoor Mughal, evaluates and treats medical and surgical retina conditions, including retinal tears, retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, macular holes, and dislocated intraocular lenses.

Why Retinal Symptoms Should Not Be Ignored

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that helps send visual information to the brain. When the retina is damaged, bleeding, pulling away, or affected by disease, vision can change quickly.

A retinal issue is not always painful. In many cases, the warning signs are visual, which is why sudden changes in your sight should be taken seriously. Calling our retina specialist early can help protect your vision and determine whether urgent treatment is needed.

Symptoms That May Be an Emergency

Some retinal symptoms should be evaluated as soon as possible. Call our office promptly if you notice:

•          A sudden increase in floaters or dark spots

•          Flashes of light in one or both eyes

•          A shadow, curtain, or veil over part of your vision

•          Sudden blurry, distorted, or missing central vision

•          Sudden vision loss

•          New dark spots after an eye injury

•          Blurry or double vision after cataract surgery

These symptoms may be linked to conditions such as retinal detachment, retinal tears, vitreous hemorrhage, or other urgent retinal concerns.

Retinal Tears and Detachments

A retinal tear can happen when the vitreous gel inside the eye pulls on the retina. If fluid passes through the tear, the retina can begin to detach from the back of the eye. A retinal detachment is a serious condition that can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated quickly.

Common signs include flashes, new floaters, or a dark curtain moving across your vision. If you experience these symptoms, do not wait to see if they improve on their own.

Vitreous Hemorrhage and Sudden Vision Changes

A vitreous hemorrhage occurs when blood leaks into the gel-like space inside the eye. It can cause sudden floaters, cloudy vision, dark spots, or a rapid decrease in sight. This may be associated with diabetic eye disease, retinal tears, trauma, or other retinal conditions. While some mild cases may improve over time, sudden bleeding inside the eye should always be evaluated to rule out more serious causes.

Macular Holes and Distorted Central Vision

A macular hole affects the central part of the retina, which is responsible for sharp detail vision. Symptoms may include blurry central vision, distortion, or a dark spot when reading or looking directly at something. Macular holes are often treated surgically, and early diagnosis can help guide the best treatment plan.
